Watercolor Contour Study

What?

We will learn about many types of contour drawings and practice them. We will take that practice drawing and turn it into a colorful artwork using watercolor, watercolor techniques, and Sharpie.

Why?

Contour drawing can have many benefits for an artist. These are just a few that I came up with:

  • To help with hand-eye coordination

  • To help with becoming more aware of details and surroundings

  • To help slow down the drawing process

  • To help bring joyful, soothing, or meditative feelings

Past Student Examples

Recreate the small painting below using inexpensive watercolors and other household items such as salt, rubbing alcohol, and plastic wrap. The last technique requires you to apply 2-3 colors within a few seconds of each other, while the paper is still wet, and allow let the colors run into each other to make a tie-dye effect.
